Algoma Steel and Red Jar Energy Partners are proposing a 400MW AI data center in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, with an operational date of October 1, 2029 if it proceeds.

The companies are seeking an early position in the provincial electricity-system operator queue for a technical assessment, but say no firm commitments have been made. The project would face local approvals under Ontario's still-unfinalized data-center framework. City council has also moved to prepare an interim control bylaw that would pause data centers until it creates its own framework.
