OptQC quantum codes support full Clifford operations without extra qubits

OptQC and collaborators developed quantum error-correction codes that support the entire logical Clifford group without additional qubits or complex measurements, Quantum Zeitgeist reports. That group defines a set of operations on protected quantum information. The construction uses symmetries in classical codes and transversal and fold-transversal gates, which limit error propagation during computation. The codes maintain an asymptotically constant encoding rate while the weight of their error-checking operations grows more slowly than logarithmically with qubit count. Initial testing focused on smaller instances. Whether the resource benefits persist at scales needed for complex problems remains unproven.
