GMO seeks Japanese state cyber intervention after trading-server breach

GMO seeks Japanese state cyber intervention after trading-server breach Image: Primary
GMO Internet Group asked Japan's government on Saturday to use its new active cyber defence powers against attackers who breached Onamae.com Desktop Cloud and demanded payment. GMO wants state agencies to trace, block and neutralise the attackers' infrastructure. Up to 26,739 servers may have been affected, GMO said. Customers reported unauthorised trades from 21 October, and attackers threatened further orders through accounts at more than 70 securities and foreign-exchange firms. GMO will close the service permanently, pay every current customer ¥5,000 and cover realised unauthorised-trading losses after broker refunds. The requested intervention would be the powers' first use, GMO says, but the company is not a designated critical infrastructure operator.
