Binance says attackers used a fake job interview to compromise an engineer's computer and move through employee systems before last week's cryptocurrency theft. Its latest account says $6.34 billion in digital assets were affected, with $2.85 billion frozen or intercepted.

The engineer downloaded malicious code disguised as an interview assignment in September. The attacker then accessed two colleagues' computers and used stolen credentials to launch the theft days before Halloween. An earlier, blocked attack involving a malicious Homebrew installer had exposed wallet infrastructure employees' identities, Binance said. The exchange has pledged to absorb the financial impact and reimburse users.
