Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced that the company's Fairwater data center campus in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin is going live ahead of schedule. In an April 16 post on X, Nadella described the facility as "the world's most powerful AI data center" that will bring together "hundreds of thousands of GB200s into a single seamless cluster."

The Fairwater campus represents a major expansion of Microsoft's AI infrastructure footprint. The company increased its investment in the Wisconsin project to $7.3 billion in September 2025. The data center complex will feature enough fiber capacity "to wrap the planet four times over" according to company descriptions.

Microsoft originally broke ground at the 90th Street location in 2023 with plans to develop 315 acres. The company received approval for an additional 1,000-acre expansion earlier that year and has been acquiring adjacent land parcels, including a 160-acre property purchased for $43 million in August 2025. In January 2026, Microsoft secured approval for 15 additional data center buildings on the campus.

The existing 315-acre Fairwater site comprises three large buildings totaling 1.2 million square feet. Construction required 46.6 miles of deep foundation piles, 26.5 million pounds of structural steel, 120 miles of medium-voltage underground cable, and 72.6 miles of mechanical piping.

Microsoft launched another Fairwater-branded data center site in Atlanta in November 2025, indicating the name represents a series of advanced AI infrastructure facilities rather than a single location.

Separately in the United Kingdom, Microsoft is nearing approval for a data center development in Leeds, West Yorkshire. Leeds City councillors have recommended approving the Skelton Grange campus plan, which would feature three three-story data centers totaling approximately 424,000 square feet each with an on-site substation. Construction could begin in early 2027 if the city's chief planning officer grants final approval.

The dual developments in Wisconsin and the UK underscore Microsoft's accelerated investment in AI compute infrastructure as demand for GPU clusters grows across cloud services and enterprise AI applications. The ahead-of-schedule Wisconsin launch suggests Microsoft is prioritizing rapid deployment of AI infrastructure capacity.
