Ubuntu's public-facing infrastructure and its developer Canonical were targeted by a distributed denial-of-service attack. The attack began on Thursday and disrupted services for users. It affected various Ubuntu and Canonical websites as well as the ability for users to update and install the operating system, according to TechCrunch.

Hacktivists identifying as The Islamic Cyber Resistance in Iraq 313 Team claimed responsibility for the attack. They reportedly used a DDoS-for-hire service named Beamed. The service allegedly offers attack capabilities exceeding 3.5 terabits per second.

The attack rendered Ubuntu's security API and several official websites inaccessible. This prevented users from performing essential system updates and installations.

The incident highlights the persistent threat posed by DDoS-for-hire services. Such services enable individuals with limited technical expertise to launch disruptive cyberattacks.

Law enforcement agencies including the FBI and Europol have targeted and dismantled such services in the past. The services continue to emerge and pose challenges to cybersecurity infrastructure.
