Newlight has raised a $9 million seed round after completing what it says was its first long-range commercial voyage using a hydrogen-injection retrofit on a Lomar Shipping bulk carrier.

The company said the system monitored engine conditions and adjusted hydrogen flow during an 8,500-nautical-mile trip from Singapore to Ghana. Newlight claimed the voyage cut fuel use by 24% and carbon dioxide emissions by 28%, and said it has agreements covering 12 vessels. The reported performance and future fleet deployments remain company claims.
