Researchers report that a catalyst made from nickel hydroxide, cerium oxide and phosphate ran continuously at high output for about 80 hours in simulated seawater without breaking down or losing performance. Their study appeared in Chemical Communications.

The combination uses less energy, favors oxygen production and corrodes less than versions lacking cerium oxide or phosphate, the researchers say. Chloride in seawater can otherwise damage catalysts and divert the reaction toward toxic chlorine byproducts.

The material forms densely packed, pyramid-shaped structures that provide more reaction sites than plain nickel hydroxide. Its demonstrated 80-hour stability remains short of what a commercial-scale plant would require.
