Northrop Grumman's YFQ-48A Blue Talon autonomous fighter completed its maiden flight at Mojave, California, New Atlas reported. The company-funded aircraft is intended to operate alongside fighters such as the F-35 and F-22 on missions including electronic warfare, reconnaissance and target designation.

Its modular design reduces component count, with reported reductions of 50% in weight and 30% in manufacturing time. Stealth features include a dorsal air intake and internal weapons bays. Northrop develops the autonomy software independently of the airframe so that software validation does not depend on a single aircraft. The flight marks a development milestone for an aircraft intended for production in large numbers.
