New York City suspends generative-AI access for students through eighth grade

New York City will temporarily bar elementary and middle school students from using student-facing generative-AI software during the coming school year, the mayor's office announced. The one-year moratorium applies through eighth grade and also prohibits companion chatbots across all grades. The city will provide twice-yearly AI-literacy classes for public high school students and run supervised pilots using a limited number of AI platforms for some high school students. Teachers may continue using AI for instructional planning and operational work.
