Microsoft has dramatically increased prices of its Surface PCs, with some models costing up to 69% more than they did just four months ago, according to a ZDNET report.

A top-tier Surface Pro configuration that cost $1,822.17 in December 2025 now sells for $3,071.63, while a 12-inch Surface Pro has risen 37% from $729 to $1,050.

The price hikes come as memory and storage component costs are projected to increase 130% by the end of 2026, driven by insatiable AI data center demand that is outstripping chip manufacturing capacity.

Microsoft confirmed the increases, stating, "Due to recent increases in memory and component costs, Surface is updating pricing on Microsoft.com for its current-generation hardware portfolio."

The broader PC market faces similar pressures, with Gartner predicting average PC prices will rise 17% by end of 2026 and the sub-$500 entry-level segment disappearing by 2028.

Ironically, Microsoft's own investment in cloud AI services contributes to the component shortages that are stalling its AI PC ambitions, potentially delaying 50% market penetration of AI PCs until 2028.

While Microsoft's Surface division struggles. the company doesn't rank among the top six PC suppliers globally. Apple has seen 12.7% shipment growth driven by its $599 MacBook Neo.

Apple's advantage stems from its A18 Pro system-on-chip with integrated memory, avoiding open-market component purchases, while PC manufacturers must compete for increasingly expensive DRAM and NAND flash.
