# Debian adopts policy permitting responsible use of generative AI

Debian has voted to neither endorse nor prohibit generative-AI tools in work published by the project, according to its adopted text. The policy covers software development, maintenance, packaging, documentation and other media. It says AI-assisted contributions must meet the same standards for quality, correctness, maintainability and legal compliance as other submissions. Contributors remain responsible for understanding, reviewing, testing and, where appropriate, modifying output before it is incorporated into Debian.
