Developer group labscommunity has released an open-source prototype driver that renders the Windows 11 desktop using a neural processing unit instead of the graphics processor, Tom's Hardware reports. Tested on Intel Panther Lake systems, npu-driver can display desktop applications and switch back to GPU rendering on request or after a fault.

The Apache 2.0-licensed project tests whether the NPU can take over desktop composition without applications knowing. Performance currently reaches around 2 to 3 Hz against a 30 Hz target. The developer describes it as a research prototype rather than a product.
