Researchers claim a major quantum computing breakthrough by proving the answer was correct
Image: Primary IBM and University of Chicago researchers said they have reached a key milestone in quantum computing by running a computation that appears beyond the reach of classical machines while providing evidence the result is correct. The work addresses a long-standing problem in the field where verifying results becomes nearly impossible as computations grow more complex.
The team used a structured type of quantum circuit that maintains computational difficulty while allowing errors to be detected during the computation. The system relies on encoded quantum circuits tied to error-correction methods and demonstrated a setup involving 70 logical qubits with built-in error protection. Within that system, researchers executed 2,415 logical two-qubit operations and 468 logical T gates.
The quantum system completed the computation in about 15 minutes. Researchers said comparable classical simulations would require impractical amounts of time. IBM director of research Jay Gambetta said the company believes the field has entered the quantum advantage era, pointing to the successful execution of a computation impractical for classical systems to replicate.
