YouTube Shorts has launched a new AI-powered feature that allows creators to generate digital avatars of themselves for use in videos. The tool creates avatars that Google says will "look and sound like" the creator.

The feature represents a significant expansion of AI capabilities on the platform, which has struggled to manage AI-generated content and deepfake concerns. YouTube frames the tool as a safer alternative to unauthorized AI-generated content, giving creators control over their digital likeness.

Several restrictions apply to the feature. Avatars can only be used in the creator's own original videos, and creators control whether their Shorts can be remixed by others. Creators can delete their avatar or remove videos featuring it at any time. Avatars not used for three years will be automatically deleted.

Access is being rolled out gradually to users aged 18 and older who have existing YouTube channels. The launch follows OpenAI's recent discontinuation of its Sora video generation platform, consolidating Google's position in consumer AI video tools.

The feature arrives as platforms face increasing pressure to address AI-generated misinformation and non-consensual synthetic media.
