D-Wave Quantum Inc. announced this week that a peer-reviewed paper published in Nature demonstrates its dual-rail qubit design can entangle cleanly, a step the company says could reduce logical error rates by a factor of 10 at each error-correction step. The research, conducted using technology acquired through the $550 million purchase of Quantum Circuits Inc. that closed in January, shows two-qubit gate fidelity near 99.9% with bit-flip errors suppressed to roughly one in a million operations. D-Wave chief scientist Rob Schoelkopf said the entangling gate is already integrated into the company's gate-model systems delivering comparable performance.

The dual-rail design encodes quantum information across two superconducting cavities using a single shared photon. If the photon leaks away, the qubit registers as empty, converting a typical hard-to-detect error into a flagged erasure that is cheaper to correct. Chief development officer Trevor Lanting said simulations leveraging the demonstrated gate performance indicate a tenfold error reduction, though experimentally determining that factor remains on the roadmap. The reported fidelity is post-selected, meaning runs with flagged errors were discarded.

D-Wave plans a near-term demonstration of a distance-3 surface code with full error-correction cycles on 17 dual-rail qubits without post-selection. The company targets a 49-qubit system in 2027 and a 100-logical-qubit system by 2032. D-Wave reported second-quarter revenue of $3.1 million, a net loss of $48 million, and a 1,120% year-over-year jump in first-half bookings to $35.5 million driven by a $20 million system sale.
