# Study finds more tracked AI researchers working in China than in US

China accounted for 41% of the leading AI researchers tracked in a Carnegie China study in 2025, compared with 34% working in the United States. In 2022, the US led this measure, 46% to China's 27%.

The researchers examined authors of papers accepted at the NeurIPS 2025 AI conference and traced full career histories for more than 10,000 of them. They also found that 57% of the tracked group took their first degree in China, up from 46% in 2022. The measure covers researchers in this conference-based sample, rather than every AI researcher.
