TDK has demonstrated a 150 nm thick mirror that directs laser light onto the retina and can be embedded in a smart-glasses lens, Electronics For You reported. The mirror has about 80% visible-light transmittance.

Nanoscale reflectors vary the reflection angle across the flat mirror, replacing the curved mirror used in conventional retinal projection systems. The optical system also prevents people facing the wearer from seeing the projected image.

TDK is combining the mirror with its laser modules and controls and working with QD Laser on optical technologies. The current mirror supports monochrome operation; full-colour operation and mass production are planned for the coming years.
