Researchers have demonstrated a device that extracts magnetic information from an altermagnet and carries it to a detector 300 nanometers away. The Nature study shows that these materials, which have internal magnetic order without net magnetization, can generate a spin current carrying that information.

An electric current passing through the altermagnet produces the spin current, which travels through a metal conduit and creates an electrical signal at the detector. Reversing the material's magnetic order with strong laboratory magnetic fields also reversed the signal.

The team identifies two remaining challenges: switching the magnetic order with low-energy electrical pulses and operating the devices at room temperature.
