The National Science Foundation selected MIT to establish and lead a Materials Research Science and Engineering Center, according to an NSF announcement released July 30.

The award is expected to provide $18 million over six years, but remains pending negotiation of a formal agreement with NSF. The center brings together 16 research groups across four institutions to work on X-ray detector materials and high-temperature sulfur-based materials for metals and semiconductor production.

Expected funding also supports a shared lab for magnetic materials and extreme-condition testing available to academic and industry users.
