Researchers at DTU Space and partner institutions reported a method that uses more than 40 years of U.S. Landsat coastline images to map tidal variation at a more local scale. The approach tracks the land-water boundary across thousands of images and combines it with beach-slope information to calculate water-level changes. The team says the data can verify and improve tidal models, including along coastlines with few gauges, and could help distinguish tidal movement from longer-term shoreline change.
