TAR, an Austin company building off-grid power systems for AI data centers, announced a Series A round led by Spark Capital, with prior investors Buckley Ventures and Align Fund participating, according to Bloomberg.

The company says its self-contained modular systems combine solar, batteries and backup natural gas generators in West Texas and do not connect to the grid. Co-founder Pat Becker told Bloomberg the company is building a project for an undisclosed Texas data center customer that will provide several hundred megawatts, and that gas will be used only for backup or emergencies.

TAR says it is also carrying out a utility-scale deployment with one of the largest neoclouds and is finishing a manufacturing and logistics center in West Texas.
