Fujifilm plans 10 billion yen expansion of magnetic tape production

Tape Cartridges in a computer Image: Primary
Fujifilm plans to spend 10 billion yen ($63.3 million) to increase magnetic tape production capacity at its Odawara plant by as much as 5x through its fiscal year 2028, Tom's Hardware reports, citing Nikkei Asia. The expansion will enable production of tapes holding up to 100TB each as AI data center construction increases storage demand. Tape serves long-term backup workloads because it offers durable storage at relatively low cost. It can cost as little as one-quarter as much as hard disks, but provides slower access than hard disks or solid-state drives.
