A study published in Nature on Wednesday found that most neurons in the mammalian cortex function as multi-tasking generalists rather than single-purpose specialists, according to researchers at Columbia University's Zuckerman Institute. The investigation analyzed International Brain Laboratory data recording activity from single neurons across 43 mouse cortical regions while the animals performed the same task. Dr. Stefano Fusi, a principal investigator at the Zuckerman Institute and co-senior author of the paper, said the results show the brain does not work like a machine made of gears with exact purposes. Instead, most neurons display a huge diversity of responses that help the brain solve many different tasks. In primary sensory areas such as the visual cortex, neurons behaved as specialists. However, in higher-order regions, neurons simultaneously encoded multiple variables such as color, shape, orientation and behavioral value, creating high-dimensional representations. Dr. Lorenzo Posani, co-lead author and a principal investigator at the Paris Brain Institute, said analyzing individual neurons one at a time makes it nearly impossible to decode brain activity because each neuron encodes a blend of variables. The true signal can only be extracted by observing the population as a collective. More than 11,000 preprint copies of the manuscript were downloaded before the peer-reviewed paper appeared. Dr. Fusi's team is collaborating with researchers at Caltech to verify if the human cortex relies on an identical architecture.
