SpaceXAI announced today that it has open-sourced Grok Build, the terminal-based AI coding agent behind its grok command-line interface, on GitHub under the Apache 2.0 license. The release covers the agent harness, terminal user interface, CLI shell, and developer tooling. Grok Build launched as an early beta on May 25, 2026. The agent understands codebases, edits files, executes shell commands, searches the web, and manages long-running tasks. It runs as a full-screen, mouse-interactive terminal user interface and also supports headless mode for scripting and continuous integration. Editors can embed it through the Agent Client Protocol. SpaceXAI said the published code maps onto named crates including xai-grok-shell for the agent loop and xai-grok-tools for tooling. The company said Grok Build can now run fully local-first by compiling it locally and pointing it at local inference through a configuration file. Use cases include auditing the tooling before adoption, forking for an internal harness, air-gapped runs, and CI automation. Prebuilt binaries are available for macOS, Linux, and Windows.
