NASA issued a request for information on Oct. 29 seeking commercial interest in raising Hubble's orbit, servicing the telescope to enhance its capabilities, or managing its eventual disposal. Responses are due by 3 p.m. EST on Nov. 30.

Hubble lacks a propulsion system to maintain its orbit, which is slowly declining because of atmospheric drag. NASA's analysis predicts atmospheric re-entry in 2033 to 2034, and the agency anticipates that a mission would need to take place by 2032. The request explores industry capabilities for extending Hubble's science lifetime or arranging controlled re-entry or orbital disposal.
