Argonne National Laboratory said it developed and tested DONUT, a physics-aware neural network for interpreting scanning X-ray nanodiffraction microscopy data at the Advanced Photon Source and Center for Nanoscale Materials.

The laboratory said the tool can produce results in real time, in some cases hundreds of times faster than traditional analysis, allowing researchers to adjust experiments as data is collected. DONUT trains on experiment data without expert-labeled examples. Argonne said the capability is particularly useful as the upgraded photon source produces data at higher speeds, and it is working toward applications in experimental automation.
