General Atomics has received tax-credit funding from California to build a Blanket Component Test Facility in San Diego.

The facility will test full-scale fusion breeding blankets, a lithium-alloy component that lines the tokamak chamber. The blanket captures neutron energy for electricity generation and breeds tritium fuel by bombarding lithium with neutrons.

Partners include the U.S. Department of Energy, Idaho National Laboratory, and the University of California San Diego. The project aims to validate blankets that enable commercial reactors to operate without external tritium supply.
