FWIK preprint reports shorter planned robot motions in simulation

Researchers report in a preprint that Future-Window Inverse Kinematics, or FWIK, reduced mean planned trajectory duration by 12.8-13.1% against STAMPEDE in simulations of two robot arms. It completed 96.8-100% of waypoint sequences and produced the shortest planned duration in all eight robot-planner settings tested. FWIK considers several upcoming waypoints when choosing joint configurations. It ranks candidate paths by estimated motion time, uses a learned model to filter likely self-collisions, and passes candidate goals to a motion planner for validation. The evaluation used simulated Franka Emika Panda and KUKA LBR iiwa arms.
