University of Rochester researchers reported a near-infrared imaging system that uses silicon-based detectors and time-gating to produce clearer images through deep tissue and dense fog. Ultrafast light bursts act as a shutter for about a picosecond, allowing infrared photons to be converted to visible light by an indium tin oxide film. In a separate collaboration, the researchers combined the technique with machine learning to reconstruct a larger target area and expand the field of view.
