University of Vienna researchers and collaborators demonstrated a method that reconstructs an ultrathin magnet's internal pattern while calculating the sensor's distance from it. The work, published in Physical Review Letters, addresses an ambiguity in magnetic imaging: different internal patterns can produce the same external field.

The algorithm selects a pattern that matches the measured field while minimizing the material's physical energy. Tested on diamond-sensor measurements of Fe₃−ₓGaTe₂, it calculated a sensor distance of 81 nanometers. The reconstruction software is open source; adapting the approach to other imaging techniques is a further application rather than the demonstrated result.
