Cloudflare says initial testing of its Cache Transcoding system reduced eligible assets to a third of their original on-disk size on average. An intern built the system to increase cache capacity on existing servers as RAM and disk prices climbed sharply over the past year.

The system compresses eligible assets with Zstandard inside Cloudflare's primary proxy before writing them to disk. Cloudflare says the results point toward petabytes of effective cache capacity and less data moving between its data centers; the reported reduction comes from initial testing.
