YouTube Adds Background Play Controls to Android Auto
Image: Primary YouTube has added background audio playback controls to Android Auto, the company's in-car software interface. The update, reported by 9to5Google, lets users manage audio playback from YouTube while the app is running in the background on Android Auto-connected vehicles.
The feature brings YouTube's in-car functionality closer to what users expect from dedicated audio apps. Previously, background playback through Android Auto was limited, requiring users to interact with the screen to manage YouTube audio. The new controls surface playback management at the Android Auto level, similar to how Spotify and other audio apps already function in the car environment.
YouTube has been steadily expanding its Android Auto capabilities as the platform works to capture more listening time in vehicles, competing with podcast apps, Spotify, and Apple Music for commuter and road trip audio. The update is rolling out on Android Auto-enabled devices.
