Databricks made built-in IP address functions generally available on Runtime 18.3 and above, allowing SQL users to parse, validate and join network data without custom libraries. The functions handle IPv4 and IPv6 addresses and network ranges expressed in CIDR notation.

An engine-level containment operation tests whether an address or smaller network falls within a larger network, supporting joins against threat-intelligence and location tables. Functions also convert addresses between text and compact binary forms. Safe variants return NULL for invalid input rather than failing a job, a useful distinction when processing malformed network logs.
