Sierra and Meta are developing Personal Agent Protocol, an open standard for authenticating personal AI agents with businesses and defining their permissions. Partners include Genesys, Instinct, Rocket, Shopify, Stripe and Walmart; a v0.1 specification is due this month.

Sessions use OAuth, allowing agents to begin as guests before customers grant read-only or write access after signing in. Businesses choose whether agents use websites, APIs or business-operated agents. Payments, push notifications and more detailed permissions are future extensions, rather than features of the first specification.
