Anthropic says it has introduced the Model Hardware Standard, a research-preview interface intended to let AI agents discover and operate programmable laboratory devices and receive measurements.

Developed with HHMI's Janelia Research Campus, the company says the standard can describe device functions, adjustable parameters and safety limits, and can be used through MCP, a command line or code. Anthropic is initially offering it to a group of laboratories and manufacturers. Reported early tests included microscopy and lab-automation workflows, but human experts intervened when Claude misread bubble-related errors in a protein assay.
