IonQ said its researchers developed and tested a real-time quantum error correction decoder that runs on a single standard CPU. The decoder processes information needed to detect and correct errors as a quantum computer operates, a task that can demand substantial computing resources.

Using an ordinary processor could simplify the supporting hardware required for larger systems. The result is a research milestone rather than a commercially fault-tolerant quantum computer: IonQ still needs to show that the approach works as the number and complexity of qubits increase.
