Researchers report that a fixed-wing interceptor controlled by a neural network intercepted maneuvering fixed-wing targets in real flight, according to an arXiv preprint. The demonstration extends the controller's testing beyond simulation to physical interception scenarios.

The network converts filtered observations from a single camera directly into actuator commands. Researchers trained it using reinforcement learning in a custom Python environment, then deployed it on a fixed-wing platform.

They also developed two classical guidance controllers as simulation baselines. The learned policy outperformed those controllers under most simulated conditions; the comparative result applies to simulation.
