An experimental toothbrush that generates electricity as its bristles bend reduced plaque, gum inflammation and bleeding in a randomized trial with 115 adults, Live Science reported. Participants used either the experimental brush or a conventional nylon brush twice daily for three months; those using the experimental brush had better results.

The bristles generate an electrical charge that triggers reactions in saliva and water, releasing molecules that damage bacterial cells. The findings appeared Nov. 4 in Science Advances.

An independent oral microbiologist described the work as proof of concept. Larger studies are needed to establish a meaningful advantage over conventional brushes, and the material and enamel tests do not establish long-term human safety.
