GitHub says it added 4 million CPU cores, 160PB of storage and 50 Tb/s of networking capacity this year to handle growing AI-generated code activity, Tom's Hardware reported. Monthly commits reached 7.4 billion in September, with commits growing sixfold year over year and merged pull requests rising 4x.

Each code change can trigger automated checks and tests, increasing demand for computing and storage. GitHub also reengineered its backend to separate storage from compute. The company attributes the activity surge to AI agents; higher repository activity measures code changes, rather than completed features or fixes.
