Munich is replacing proprietary infrastructure and collaboration software with open-source alternatives, chief digital officer Laura Dornheim said at Open Source Summit Europe. The city is moving from VMware to Proxmox, from Jira and Confluence to OpenProject and XWiki, and adopting PostgreSQL as an alternative to Oracle databases.

The infrastructure and collaboration migrations are expected to save roughly €1.5 million or more annually. The city also publishes software it develops for reuse by other municipalities and supports developers through an Open Source Sabbatical program. The current strategy does not restore LiMux, Munich's former Linux desktop deployment.
