ForSight Robotics said its JASPER platform completed a robot-assisted cataract surgery on a human patient in April, marking the first time a robotic system has performed the full procedure from initial incision to closure. The surgery was conducted by Dr. Alexey Rapoport with Dr. Robert Edward T. Ang of the Asian Eye Institute in Manila serving as principal investigator.

"This is a transformative event that happened because this is the gateway to really accomplishing the vision of standard designing or doing consistent surgery and being able to accommodate many more surgeons," said Dr. Joseph Nathan, ForSight's co-founder, president, and chief medical officer.

ForSight said JASPER completed the full procedure from start to finish, unlike previous ophthalmic robotic systems that performed only partial tasks during cataract surgery. "We're not changing anything, and we're doing the whole procedure, every step from the first incision to the incision closure," Nathan said.

The platform uses AI to prevent surgical errors but operates under full surgeon control rather than autonomously. ForSight has worked with surgeons across multiple geographies on animal and artificial models to optimize control and consistency. The company aims to pursue U.S. regulatory approval for the JASPER platform.
