Cloudflare announced EmDash, an open-source content management system built as a spiritual successor to WordPress, according to a company blog post. The platform is written in TypeScript and runs on a serverless architecture powered by Astro, allowing deployment on Cloudflare or any Node.js server. Cloudflare said EmDash addresses the fundamental security problem of the WordPress plugin architecture by running plugins in isolated sandboxes called Dynamic Workers. Plugins request specific capabilities via a manifest, such as reading content or sending email, and cannot perform actions outside those declared permissions. The company cited data indicating 96% of WordPress security issues originate in plugins and noted that high-severity vulnerabilities in the WordPress ecosystem increased in 2025. Cloudflare said the WordPress.org plugin review queue exceeds 800 plugins with a wait of at least two weeks. EmDash is MIT licensed and uses no WordPress code, which the company said allows for a more permissive license than WordPress's GPL. A v0.1.0 preview is available for developers to deploy to a Cloudflare account or try via an online playground.
