The Apache Iceberg community adopted read restrictions and catalog labels for its REST Catalog, Databricks said. The additions let catalogs delegate data-access restrictions to trusted query engines and exchange table and column metadata with other catalogs.

Read restrictions convey the evaluated row filters and column actions an engine must enforce. Their initial vocabulary includes nine predefined column actions and cannot represent every enterprise policy. Catalog labels exchange key-value metadata that receiving catalogs map into local policies. The standard does not establish how an engine earns trust or define shared meanings for labels, leaving administrators to supply security mechanisms and metadata conventions.
