Australian company Apate operates around 350,000 AI bots that engage scammers by phone, text and online chat groups, founder and CEO Dali Kaafar told WIRED. He says the platform, used by banks and supported by telecom companies, has collected more than 250,000 pieces of fraud intelligence, including scam URLs, money mule accounts and bank details.

The bots adopt different personalities and language skills to prolong conversations while gathering information. WIRED tested a demonstration and found the conversation responsive and naturally timed; its reporters failed to persuade the bot to invest in cryptocurrency during six minutes of effort. That demonstration tested conversational behavior, rather than measuring reductions in fraud.
