A Chinese research collaboration claims it transmitted data at 3.2 Pb/s in real time through 24-core optical fiber, improving on its earlier 2.5 Pb/s result. Tom's Hardware reported the finding, citing the Hubei provincial government website.

The test combined separate transmission paths within the fiber with transmission across the S, C and L optical bands. Researchers addressed interference between paths and differing requirements across those bands, using commercially compliant hardware architectures.

The result concerns real-time transmission rather than the highest laboratory throughput: experiments using advanced or experimental signal processing and laboratory equipment have reached 5.29 Pb/s across similar 24-core fiber. Deployment of the new system remains prospective.
