Researchers demonstrate mobile heat engine using gas-filled capsules

Researchers report an experimental system that performs thermodynamic cycles by moving gas-filled capsules across a thermal gradient, extending heat-engine operation beyond fixed thermal reservoirs. Their arXiv preprint connects this energy-conversion process with robotic mobility and sensing. The capsules can occupy multiple stable states. The researchers' model shows how rapid transitions between energy states let the mobile system harvest and store energy. They also link the capsules' internal energy changes to navigation, optimizing routes that balance the energy gained against the cost of movement. The demonstration relies on spatial differences in temperature.
