California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a package of 12 online child-safety bills, including two that EFF supported: AB 2071 and AB 2298.

AB 2071 integrates digital wellness into middle and high school health classes, covering unhealthy tech habits, personal safety, and evaluating digital content including AI-generated media for credibility and bias. AB 2298 adds cybersecurity concepts to recommended school curricula, teaching students to safeguard personal data from online threats.

EFF said it opposed another signed bill, AB 1709, which it describes as a functional ban on under-16 social media use, and framed the literacy measures as an education-based alternative to prohibition.
