Researchers presented PhoneBot, an open-source humanoid robot that uses a consumer smartphone for sensing and computation, in an arXiv preprint. They report experimental demonstrations of walking and perception-driven interaction using off-the-shelf phones.

The robot combines 13 low-cost actuators in a modular lower body with a torso-mounted smartphone. The phone supplies a camera, motion sensing, wireless connectivity and processing for control and interaction. The platform supports human following, conversation, filming and mobile telepresence; the reported evaluations remain preprint findings.
