The Senate could vote as early as next week to advance the Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act, according to the Bipartisan Policy Center. The proposed permitting overhaul would narrow environmental reviews and change how data centers pay for electricity infrastructure.

The bill would give lead agencies 45 days to decide on projects after environmental review and impose a 150-day deadline for legal challenges. It would require large electricity customers to pay for both new and existing transmission infrastructure.

Environmental groups warn that narrower reviews and limits on courts' ability to halt projects would reduce community oversight. Debate could slip into next year.
